MD/MPH Combined Degree Program

Overview

Healthcare is a rapidly growing and constantly changing field requiring multidisciplinary approaches to caring for individuals and the pursuit of long-term sustainable solutions to improving population health. The MD/MPH combined degree program provides students with a solid foundation in public health and medicine, equipping them with the clinical skills and science to address health and wellness from the perspective of the individual patient as well as the community and population. Graduates of this program are able to use the two perspectives to research and identify individual and public health issues and affect broad, evidence-based approaches to health improvement. This program prepares students for work in public health agencies, healthcare organizations (public and private), and community-based organizations, as well as the health insurance and other healthcare-related industries.

The MD/MPH degree program exists because of a partnership between the UAMS College of Medicine (COM) and the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health (COPH) and offers an accelerated, coordinated course of study. Several courses at each school satisfy requirements for both degree programs; as a result, the combined degree program saves a student time and money. Students are able to earn both degrees within four years rather than the standard five years when the degrees are pursued independently.

Completion of all MD/MPH course requirements, including the two final projects (preceptorship and culminating experience), ensures that graduates have attained the MPH core competencies and the MD/MPH competencies:
