Education and Training Core

The Education component unifies community partners, graduate/ medical students, and junior faculty across all colleges to access the ARCHD’s educational resources. The BA/MPH and BS/MPH programs will serve to increase under-represented minority students’ (URM) interest in public health sciences as a career option.

An active partnership with undergraduate institutions, specifically historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) throughout the state, is a unique and critically important part of the COPH’s ongoing commitment to work proactively, earlier in the academic ‘pipeline,’ to increase the number of URM students who pursue graduate-level public health study. Additionally, we recognize the importance of support and peer mentoring specific to the needs of URM students to ensure student retention, advancement to doctoral study, and a successful career transition.

Specific Aims

Aim 1: Implement BA/MPH and BS/MPH combined degree programs in collaboration with three HBCUs in Arkansas, and enroll multiple students into these programs annually.

Aim 2: Provide support and peer mentoring systems for URM students enrolled in the BA/MPH programs and throughout the COPH to increase their academic success and support their readiness for related doctoral programs.

Aim 3: Increase COPH recruitment activities within partner HBCUs, not only for the BA/MPH program but also for all available degree programs, especially doctoral programs.
