Overview
Audiologists are healthcare professionals who provide patient-centered care in the prevention, identification, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of hearing, balance, and other related disorders for people of all ages. The AuD/MPH combined degree program prepares students for clinical practice in audiology while expanding into other areas such as rural and global public health, health policy and management, and environmental health sciences. Their training equips them with the competencies and skills to practice audiology, but they also gain a theoretical and practical understanding that enables them to incorporate a population-based focus into their audiology practice. Graduates of this program are able to use public health science and theory to provide effective public health interventions in concert with their audiology practice, thus treating the individual and community. This program prepares students with a multidisciplinary perspective for work in public health agencies, audiology practice, healthcare organizations (public and private), government entities and industry.
The AuD/MPH degree program exists because of a partnership between the UAMS College of Health Professions and the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health and offers an accelerated, coordinated course of study. Several courses at each school satisfy requirements for both degree programs; as a result, the combined degree program saves a student time and money. Students are able to earn both degrees in as little as four years rather than the standard six years when the degrees are pursued independently. When entered into the MPH program, students select one of five areas for concentrated study: Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Health Education, Health Policy and Management, and Rural and Global Public Health.
Competencies and Curriculum
Completion of all AuD/MPH course requirements, including the two final projects (COPH 5989 Applied Practice Experience and COPH 5992 Integrative Learning Experience), ensures that graduates have attained competencies in the core elements of public health and their selected MPH concentration.
Students enrolled in the concurrent AuD/MPH degree program may apply up to 9 credit hours from the AuD program towards credit in the MPH program. Students in the AuD/MPH program may be able to count the same project for COPH 5989 and AUDI 5401/AUDI 5461 Practicum/Externship requirement if the project adheres to the requirements of both programs and is approved by their program advisor at each college. In addition, students in the AuD/MPH program may be able to count the same project for COPH 5992 and the AUDI 5361 Directed Research requirement if the project adheres to the requirements of both programs and is approved by their program advisor at each college.
In addition to the course requirements and final projects, students in the combined degree program are also required to complete training and activities or exams in Biology, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Interprofessional Education.
