Dr. Joe Bates, M.D., M.S., was a pulmonologist, epidemiologist, microbiologist, and public health official who pioneered safe and effective outpatient treatment for tuberculosis in the 1960s and 1970s. He was instrumental in advocating that all funds from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement be used only to address the health of Arkansans through public health initiatives including development of the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health.
