Teaching Focus

Dr. Boysen teaches introductory Environmental Health Science and Principles of Toxicology for Public Health courses. Both emphasize understanding, comprehension, and communication of public and environmental health issues, aiming to support data-driven decision-making. His teaching philosophy ranges from basic conditioning to active engagement and peer teaching, encouraging students to apply scientific knowledge in real-world contexts.

Research Overview

Dr. Boysen is interested in understanding the interplay between chemical exposure and nutritional or lifestyle habits, such as diet selection and physical activity. To achieve this DNA and protein adducts are utilized to study carcinogen metabolism, how it is modified by nutritional components and the underlying mechanisms regulating corresponding enzyme activities. In addition, exposure related changes in common metabolic pathways are investigated, using targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry based metabolomic approaches. The long-term goal Dr. Boysen’s research is to understand metabolic reprogramming of metastases to identify novel therapy targets.

Fun Fact

I’m an avid cross-country skier, and one of my greatest joys is participating in the annual American Birkebeiner Ski Race in Wisconsin. It’s a challenge that fuels my passion for the outdoors and keeps me motivated. When I’m in Arkansas, I find peace and inspiration by riding my bicycle to Petit Jean on Mt. Magazine for coffee. I embrace every moment, believing that life is full of opportunities, and it’s too short to waste any of them.
