Introduction
Dr. Orloff involves students in his ongoing projects researching cancer epidemiology. Through his role in the graduate programs, he proactively mentors students in their career and research paths.
Credentials, Accreditations and Awards
2023 Mentor Award, UAMS
2015 Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, COPH, UAMS
2012 Innovator Award for developing genomic biomarkers of lung cancer risk, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH
Teaching Focus
Dr. Orloff’s research and classroom teaching are explicitly integrated. Students benefit from his cross-disciplinary training in bench genomics epidemiology and genetic/molecular epidemiology. As reflected in their achievements and competence, he is proud of the academic training and 360-degree mentoring he has provided to his students and mentees.
Research Overview
Dr. Orloff’s research seeks to understand how genetics and epigenetics influence cancer risk. In populations of European and African ancestry, he has identified genetic biomarkers for lung, endometrial, and esophageal cancers. His recent investigation focuses on combining biology (genetics and epigenetics), social structural factors and behavior to reduce tobacco use and cancer health disparities.
