Introduction

Dr. Mukherjee researches epigenetic factors linked to diseases across the lifespan. She actively organizes professional development activities for students to foster their academic readiness.

Credentials, Accreditations and Awards

2020 – Competitive Fellowship, Japanese Society for Promotion of Science
2018 – Student Achievement Award, University of Memphis
2016 – Travel award, NIGMS
2014 – 1st Place, Interdisciplinary Case Competition, University of Memphis

Teaching Focus

Dr. Mukherjee’s teaching focus is on molecular epidemiology. Both MPH and PhD students are exposed to a systematic discussion on how molecular mechanisms can inform evidence-based opportunities to reduce chronic disease burden. Students are also introduced to the basic principles of genetics, genomics, molecular biology, and their applications to epidemiology and public health.

Research Overview

Dr. Mukherjee investigates the role of epigenetic factors, specifically DNA methylation and its interactions with the genome and the exposome, on disease outcomes over the life course.

Fun Fact

Dr. Mukherjee became a molecular epidemiologist because she believes epigenetic mechanisms have the potential to revolutionize population health by enhancing our understanding of how the environment influences our genes. This insight can lead to improved prediction and personalized treatment of diseases.”
