Master of Health Administration Current Students Experience & Requirements

Program Requirements and Overview

The Master of Health Administration requires 51 credit hours (17 courses), all of which are taken as required courses with no electives. The curriculum is structured in developmental sequences, with each semester’s work building on the previous courses. The MLM concentration substitutes four courses with MLM-specific courses.

The program is designed to be completed in two academic years by full-time students or three/four years by part-time students (see tracks starting on Page 23).  A summer experiential course provides hands-on experience in a healthcare institution through either a health administrative residency or a management project (see next section).

The recommended course sequences for part-time students are designed to maintain the developmental structure of the curriculum.  For example, HPMT 51143 Management of Healthcare Organizations is taken before the student enrolls in HPMT 55883 Strategic Healthcare Management.  The statistics course is taken early in the program to provide valuable skills needed in other courses. Students can elect to increase or decrease the number of hours for which they enroll in each semester.  The Program does not recommend enrolling for less than 6 credit hours during any semester.

The courses are structured in an accelerated 8-week format. Taking one course over 8 weeks is equivalent in workload to taking two courses over a typical 16-week semester. Each class meets live via Zoom one night per week. The class sessions are typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting from 6-8 p.m. Central time.

Academic Advising

Each student is assigned an academic advisor. The role of the advisor is to advise and guide the student in registration, the process to graduation, career development, etc. The student may change advisors at any time. The student should expect to have one formal meeting with their advisor each semester, as well as informal check-ins. Advising is a student-driven process that can help ensure the long-term success of the student.

Graduation Requirements

Students must complete 51 hours of graduate coursework outlined in the curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students must also complete the IPE Curriculum Requirements, Academic Integrity Requirement, and Writing Milestone Requirement specified in the degree track planner. Requirements must be completed within six consecutive years after admission date. Completed application and fee must be turned in by the graduation deadline.
