Speaker:  Joseph Su, Ph.D., MPH, Professor, COPH Department of Epidemiology/Co-director, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences program, UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute

Time and Location: Wednesday, Jan. 20, 12 noon-1pm, COPH 3280

Objective: To familiarize the faculty member or postdoctoral fellow who has not applied for an NIH grant, but is interested in doing so.

Dr. Su served as a Program Director and Referral Officer during his tenure at NIH prior joining the UAMS. Attendees to this seminar should have a general understanding of available funding mechanisms and grant review processes at the NIH.

Ernest M. Drucker, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family and Social Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine; and Senior Research Associate and Scholar in Residence at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of The City University of NY, will present “Drug Policies and Criminal Justice: From Punishment to Public Health” on Thursday January 14, 4:30-6pm, I. Dodd Wilson Education Building, Lecture Hall Rm 126. Light refreshments will be provided.

Drucker is licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in NY State and conducts research in AIDS, drug policy, and prisons and is active in public health and human rights efforts in the US and abroad. For 25 years Dr. Drucker was Director of Public Health and Policy Research at Montefiore/Einstein, founding Director of Montefiore’s 1000 patient drug treatment program until 1990; an NIH funded principal investigator since 1991 and author of over 100 peer reviewed scientific articles, texts, and book chapters. He was founding Associate Editor of The International Journal of Drug Policy; founder and Editor in Chief ( with John Booth Davies) of Addiction Research and Theory ( 1993- 2005); and is now founding Editor in Chief of Harm Reduction Journal. Dr. Drucker was a founder (in 1994) of the International Harm Reduction Association; founder and Chairman of the Board of Doctors of the World / USA (1993-1997). He has been a Fellow of the Lindesmith Center at the Open Society Institute, a senior Soros Justice Fellow since 2004, and is a 2010-2011 Senior Specialist in Global Health of the US/Australian Fulbright Program at the Law School of the University of New South Wales. His book, A Plague of Prisons: The Epidemiology of Mass Incarceration in America, was published by The New Press in Sept of 2011.

About the Course

This course describes and demonstrates effective strategies for using propensity score methods to address the potential for selection bias in observational studies comparing the effectiveness of treatments or exposures. We review the main analytical techniques associated with propensity score methods (matching, weighting, multivariate regression adjustment and stratification using the propensity score, sensitivity analysis for matched samples) and describe key strategic concerns related to effective propensity score estimation, assessment and display of covariate balance, choice of analytic technique, and communicating results effectively. Although we will focus on established approaches to dealing with design and analytical challenges, we conclude the session by reviewing some literature regarding recent methodological advances in propensity scores and application of propensity score methods to problems in health policy research.
This full-day course focuses on providing a useful experience for statisticians and others who are familiar with regression models and have some experience with studies comparing treatments, but does not mandate prior experience with applying propensity methods. Attendees will receive detailed handouts, and access to R scripts and other software tools to carry out analyses , which will be demonstrated in the session.
