Neal Barnard, M.D., a national expert on plant-based nutrition as a therapeutic intervention for diabetes and other chronic diseases, will be in Little Rock for three days in early January. He will speak at UAMS and the Arkansas Department of Health. The events are open to the public.
Dr. Barnard is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and president of the Washington Center for Clinical Research.

- Wednesday, Jan. 7, 4-5 p.m. — “Plant-based Nutrition and the Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease.” Jo Ellen Ford Auditorium, Institute on Aging.
- Thursday, Jan. 8, 8-9 a.m. — “A Nutritional Intervention for Type 2 Diabetes.” Public Health Grand Rounds, Arkansas Department of Health Auditorium.
Objectives: state the rationale for the use of plant-based diets in diabetes management; evaluate the effect of diet interventions on glucose, lipids, body weight, and neuropathy; and describe how to initiate and monitor therapeutic diets for patients with type 2 diabetes
- Friday, Jan. 9, noon-1 p.m. — “Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Disease with Plant-based Nutrition.” College of Pharmacy Seminar Series, Room G225, College of Public Health, and Room P16 for interactive video at UAMS Northwest. Co-sponsored by the colleges of Public Health, Medicine and Nursing.
Objectives: understand the rationale for the use of plant-based diets for the management of diabetes, based on research studies on their efficacy and mechanisms of action; learn how a plant-based diet influences body weight, blood glucose, and lipids; and learn how to construct and initiate a therapeutic diet.
