Applies to students in MPH, MD/MPH, MPS/MPH, PharmD/MPH, and AUD/MPH with this concentration:
- Assess the successes and failures of national public health systems in rural versus urban settings.
- Develop communication skills to disseminate the health impacts of climate change in both scientific and lay terms.
- Evaluate how climate change adversely impacts population health, with differing vulnerability across rural and global communities.
- Develop a plan that uses global insight to address a local public health issue.
- Design an online interactive web map to enable spatial representation of data on a public health issue to support public health planning, decision-making, and dissemination.
Students Beginning Program Fall 2021 to Summer 2022
Applies to students in MPH, MD/MPH, MPS/MPH, and PharmD/MPH programs with this concentration.
- Assess the successes and failures of national public health systems in rural versus urban settings.
- Write a statistical story that communicates a public health issue to a broad audience.
- Evaluate the differential impact of disease outbreaks in frontier, rural, and urban settings.
- Develop a plan that uses global insight to address a local public health issue.
- Provide integrated perspectives on how aspects of program evaluation can be used to increase the effectiveness of rural public health programs.
Students Beginning Program Fall 2017 to Fall 2020
- Gather, evaluate, integrate and communicate rural and global public health evidence.
- Respond to public health issues in rural settings by defining and distinguishing between urban, rural and frontier areas in terms of demographic, social and economic characteristics, and political attributes as these impact healthcare delivery systems and provision of public health services.
- Use basic health numeracy skills in public health practice and research with populations of low density and widespread geographic dispersion.
- Use global insight in responding to local public health issues to bring together diverse and global ideas to increase understanding of local rural issues and practices, including language and communication differences, in innovative ways in rural settings.
- Use global insight in responding to local public health issues to demonstrate sensitivity and genuine respect for a multiplicity of values, beliefs, traditions, experiences, and feelings of satisfaction or distress stemming from social circumstances in global and rural settings.
Students Beginning Program Fall 2013 to Summer 2017
- Understand similarities and differences between rural and urban public health and health care systems and service delivery.
- Demonstrate awareness of routine and crisis communication processes in rural public health settings.
- Understand population distribution and other demographic differences between rural and non rural areas.
